The Smart Living ecosystem is rapidly developing. In Europe, residential buildings offer great potential for Smart Home / Smart Building technologies or related cross-sectoral applications and services. In the future, these technologies and smart services will become an integral part of our lives.

Digitalisation of Buildings and Data Usage

Advanced Smart Services are considered essential for various virtual assistants and the optimization of energy efficiency. As buildings are always part of larger structures and networks, Smart Homes, Smart Buildings, or groups of them should be capable to interact with smart energy grids, smart city structures, smart mobility solutions, or smart assistance services. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a key driver for this development, as it enables highly personalized, context-aware applications for cross-domain use. A core requirement for AI is the extensive digitalization of buildings and their technical systems, as well as scalable, trustworthy, easily accessible, and resilient data bases.

The domain’s vision is to enable these cross-sectoral applications or services and to establish concepts, examples, and implementations for a Smart Living data space based on Gaia-X. Additionally, it aims to develop dedicated AI methods for intelligent queries in federated catalogues, AI-based data abstractions, digital twins, and an intelligent orchestration of data and services. Given the close collaboration with cognate domains, the overarching goal of the Smart Living domain is a Gaia-X-based “Building as an Intelligent Service.”
